Ruth dies at just age 10
Ruth, one of the children we support passed away this week. Aged 10 she had been staying at cottage D in the Nyumbani Children’s Home. Ruth arrived a year ago at the Nyumbani Home and was very poorly at the time. Prior to coming to the Home she had been living with her grandmother in an Internal Displacement Camp in the Rift Valley for the last three years. She had a heart problem as well as respiratory problems.
A little over a year ago our staff went to do a home visit, it was raining and the rain ran right through the floor of the tent where they had lived and everything was soaked. The next day she was accepted into the Nyumbani Home. From the time Ruth arrived at Nyumbani we knew we would not be able to turn her around. She had been sick too long with little medical treatment. Her HIV was under control but we could not reverse the damage to her heart and lungs.
Our staff did all they could to care for her. Last Thursday morning she was struggling to breathe and the oxygen given did not help her. We knew it was only a matter of time. At about 1pm last Thursday afternoon Ruth passed away. Ruth was such a peaceful child despite suffering as a result of post-election violence in Kenya, which saw her displaced from her home. She loved everyone and shared her heart-warming smile with all.
